Tips for the GRE Sentence Completion

Finding yourself at fix while attempting the Sentence Completion section of the GRE? You seem logical though. The sentence completion, coupled with antonyms and analogies, pose great threat to test takers in the GRE Verbal section. Though this section seems intimidating, a proper implementation of a few strategies mentioned here would greatly help you maximize your score in this section.

Here, a sentence is presented to you with one or two words in it missing, which makes the sentence incomplete. This sentence is then followed by five answer choices that contain words to fill the blank space/spaces of the sentence appropriately. Your job is to identify the option that best fits the blank space of the sentence and makes it meaningful.

So, to do this, read the given sentence thoroughly assuming that there are no options provided. In other words, read the question first and not the options. While reading the question, pay enough attention to locate the trigger words like, “that”, “because”, “while”, “which”, “however” etc. These words help us determine the direction in which the sentence is moving. If you find that a particular sentence is moving along one line of thought, then you have to choose positive words to fill the gap. Likewise, if you find the trigger words that contradicts the thoughts or shifts the thought, you should assume that negative word/words would best fit the blank space of the question. In order to make your task a bit easier, try to find the contextual clues. These words help in getting an idea about the type of sentence present.

After establishing all the above things, generate your own word/words for the blank. Based on this, move on to each option and see which option contains the like of your words. Sometimes, in dual blank questions, you may find one word from an option filling one blank of the question perfectly but the other word in it not matching the second blank; in this case it won’t be the correct answer. Your preferred words should match each blank and make it meaningful in every sense. Hence, it is important that you spend considerable time with each option, and based on the elimination process narrow down the options and find the most suitable one. Your command of vocabulary will come in handy here since your understanding of the words and their meanings will make it easy to get the correct option. You may notice two options that look similar sometimes. This is a mere ploy of the test makers to deceive you. In such a case, rely on your ear and find the one you think is the best. However, practice as many practice questions as possible every day.
